On my 20" iMac (early 2008) El Capitan, all my photos show as thumbnails but when I click on them not all open to the full size image, they are a grey triangle with an exclamation mark .
There is no problem on my other devices, a 27" imac, ipad mini, iphone 5 and iphone 8.

I have tried repairing the library, which had no effect.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to rectify this?

I have just restored the Library from a Time Machine backup and then let it update and the problem persists.

What are you opening the photos with? Does another program work?

Do you have Graphic Converter perhaps?

The macos 'Photos' app.

With a little expeimentation I have found it is only the images taken with the iphone 8 that do not display.
The iphone 8 images are in .HEIC format which causes the problem on the El Capitan machine. All other combinations seem to work.

I have just downloaded an app to convert .HEIC to .jpg, hopefully that will get things sorted.
