pdf to rtf error message

I have set up the PDF to RTF conversion application in the Mac Automator, as illustrated in the screenshot with this posting. After selecting a PDF document to convert, the following message appears: "The document could not be opened."
Basically, the conversion application doesn't work for some reason.

Thanks for any tips on how to troubleshoot this error message.

There are many reasons a PDF may not open.

Does it have a password? What App made it? Does it have Rich Text data?

Does it work with plain Text?
