My mail notifications sounds continue whenever I get new mail. I've turned it off on system preferences. Why does it continue?

Hello and welcome.

-Which model Mac?
-Which version of OS X?
-Have you tried turning all notifications for Mail off in Notifications? Have you tried Do Not Disturb mode?
-Are the Mail notification sounds the only ones that cannot be silenced?

Its a Macbook Pro. OSX Yosemite.

I turned all the notifications off. If I put it on do not disturb then I won't be notified of anything, not what I want. And Yes, mail notifications are the only ones that cannot be silenced. Thanks for any help.

OK...here is a possible fix from a thread on Apple Discussions:

Dan Roesser - Notifications preferences don't hold

It is always a good idea to make sure you have a Time Machine or other backup before troubleshooting and trying suggested solutions. Follow the instructions and let us know if that solves it, or if you have any questions about performing the steps.
