I have less than 4gb of 245 free, 193gb of this is documents, apparently. However there are almost NO documents , certainly only about 900mbs worth. Any idea what/where these 'documents are? TIA.

Hello and welcome.

Documents is a generic category when viewing storage space allocation. It can include regular documents - DOC/TXT/PDF/etc., log files, email, and even miscellaneous files that are not applications, executables, graphics, audio, etc. There are help documents and manuals that may be in folders other than your user folder that are installed with software. Also, if you are using iCloud Drive, those files are stored locally on your Mac as well.

193 GB does sound out of the ordinary though. Do you use any online syncing like iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.?

Here are some good applications that may help identify what is taking up all the space:

See if any of those help and let us know.
