New photos app not opening

Hi,
2 months ago I updated my 2009 iMac to Yosemite 10.10.3. The day after I left home for 2 months work abroad. Today I arrived back and started up the computer which had been off the entire time. When I tried to open the new photos app it doesn't get past the "get started" window. My photos are still on the hard drive because I can see them in Finder. I've been looking at the enclosed screen shot for half an hour. Restarted the app. Didn't help. When I click on a photo it opens in Preview. Any suggestions? Thanks!
