Mini DVI port to HDMI

Hello,i purchased and tried to install a mini DVI to HDMI (nextech) to send video to my sony 3D tv,I followed the set up but nothing happened, it does not acknowledge that the port is hooked up and also my computer started crashing, i'm not certain if this is related but i disconnected the fire wire connection just in case and it seems to have cleared up.I am presently running HIGH SIERRA Is there a fix to this problem.I am not very tech savvy and a little insight would be appreciated.I am running a MAC OS 21.5"

Thank you,My iMac is a 21.5" Intel core I5 8GB 1600 MHZ DDR3 late 2012
My Sony tv model KDL-46NX810
My Nextech adapter model 80075-10 mini display port to HDMI
The nextech adapter was connected from the computer to an HDMI cable to my TV,that is what i disconnected
because i could not get it to work and the iMac was freezing up.I have not had a problem since i removed the connection to the TV.
