Next week I will be migrating from my current MacMIni to a new iMac.

I have my MacMini backed up to an external HD using Time Machine.

Should I disconnect the Time Machine HD before wiping the MacMini that I will be giving to a friend?

I wonder if the Time Machine backup will reflect the clean MacMini and then cause me problems installing my new iMac when I go to setup.

Obviously a newbie question but I want to do this correctly.

Thanks for advice.

Hello and welcome.

-Which model Mac mini and which version of OS X?
-Which model new iMac and which version of OS X?

As for the Time Machine backup, just make a last, current backup before migrating your data to the new iMac. Once that is complete, and you have verified your files all transferred, you can then erase the Mac mini and prep it for your friend.

When performing the migration to the iMac, the state of the old Mac mini will not influence anything, since the drive is no longer connected to the mini. Just make sure you don't wipe the mini, then create the last Time Machine backup of it. ;)

Hope that helps, and let us know if you have additional questions or concerns.
