Merged iMovie can not be shared

I am on an iMac mid 2010 running OS X El Capitan, The processor is 2.93GHz Intel with 16 GB memory and a Mac HD with 254 GB free.

I trying to merge over 1700 MP4 segments into one MP4 movie. iMovie allowed me to load all these files and make a project. However, it will not let me share the completed movie to a file. The source of the MP4 segments are from a Sony HDR-CX405 Handcam. In projects mode it plays my segments as a merged movie.

imovie had an upgrade in February. Could this be the cause of the problem I am having?

Hello and welcome.

-Which exact version of iMovie?
-Does iMovie directly recognize the Sony, or did you have to import/convert the files some other way?

It may be due to the number of segments in the movie - 1700 is quite a lot.
