Malware

I have had conflicting advice about protective software for my Macs. MacKeeper keeps sending me notifications but at the same time comes up as malware itself when I scan with Malwarebytes, which is what the Genius Bar guy suggested. What do people out there use, if anything?

Hello and welcome.

MacKeeper is not recommended, as it causes far more problems than it solves. I recommend uninstalling it, then running Malwarebytes to see where things stand. Lufbrarunner is correct - ClamXAV is also a good antivirus application, but best to run on demand and not via its Sentry background process.
