am in a country where the possibility of someone selling a supposed new i mac could have used it and put it back in stock........is there a program that records the amount of time on a hard drive or the machines usage hrs..........

Hello,

The only way that I know of is by using a S.M.A.R.T. disk utility:

DriveDx
SMART Utility

They will show you the total power on time of a hard drive. Of course, there may be a little from the factory, as pre-shipment testing and imaging will be counted, but the number should be in hours only, not days or months.

There is also a Terminal command that will show uptime since the last boot, but that is reset each time the Mac is started.

It should be reasonably easy to tell if an iMac has been repacked, by the state of the packaging itself.
