Mail re-marks messages as Unread and Mail counter is incorrect

M1 MacMini and Intel MacBook Pro, both running latest Monterey, Mail app keeps re-marking read messages as unread AND the unread counter in Mail is also off so that when ALL messages show Read, the counter still shows either 1, 2 or 3, even though a search for unread messages turns up none?

Is there an easy/safe way to just remove the Mail app and preferences and then reload a fresh copy of the Mail app?

There isn't any way to remove only the Mail app and reinstall it individually.

• How many email accounts are setup?
• What is/are the email provider(s)?
• If more than one, does this happen with all or just one/a few of the accounts?
• Does it happen if Mail is open on only one of the Macs at a time, when it is open on both, etc.?
