Mail Hangup

My Mail program is hung up. I cannot get the application to close, and as a result the computer will not shut down (when I try I get a message to close Mail, which I cannot do). HOw can I get this application so shut down?

Press Option Command Escape to bring up the Force Quit Application window ...

Or click on the desktop and choose Force Quit... from the Apple Menu.
