Mac want start up

I had to turn power off because my Mac was lockup and would not let me force quit anything or shut it down. Now when I turn it on it is a gray screen and it just spins. What do I need to do to get it started again. Never had problems before. I used to know how to zap the ram but have forgotten, and I am not sure that it would work. Thanks for your help
