Mac systems alert

My computer has become infected by a popup that says Mac systems alert. I can no longer use safari. I downloaded adware medic (on firefox) but that hasn't helped. Any suggestions?

It would be good to know what exact Mac model you are on, and which OS you are using. Also, if the OS is not Yosemite, there were updates to the prior somewhat "OS-related" versions of Safari.

It seems like AdwareMedic is a good product (latest version is 1.2, released 4 days ago):

Note, though, that it's primary purpose is to remove "adware" from one's system. You should give ClamXav a try:
