Mac screen and logo on back flashes when lid is closed!

My mac screen and apple logo at the back flashes really fast when I shut the lid. I have restarted my computer countless times and it still does the same thing. But when I manually put it to sleep by pressing the power button then it does not flash. It only flashes when I close the lid.

HELP ME!!!

It sounds as if it is not completely going to sleep.

-Which exact model Mac?
-Which version of Mac OS X?
-Any damage to the case?
-Can you sleep the Mac using the Apple menu command?
