I was out shopping with my wife when I saw this in CEX and thought 'Why not'. I paid £148 (approx $200) for it.
This was the base spec machine, 16gb RAM 256gb SSD and dual AMD FirePro D300 graphics.
After a quick search through my garage I found 4 X 8gb DDR3 sticks and a 1tb SSD which were very easy to install.
The latest MacOS for this is Monterey, but I also have Mojave on an external SSD so that I can use it with some 32bit apps.
I read some reports that tis model ran 'hot' but so far it only runs about 1.5°C hotter than my M2 mini.

What a find....

If you are up fgor a challenge the trash can mac can run ESXi which allows it to run multiple virtual machines simultaniously. Or you can also use OpenCore legacy patcher and run macOS Sonoma on it.

I have just been looking at OLP. I will try it out.

OK, Now running Sonoma 14.7.8. OpenCore Legacy Patcher was easy enough to set up, although quite time consuming but worth it in the long run.
It appears that it is possible to go up to Sequoia, but I will leave that for a while.

OK, I have now reverted back to Monterey, as Sonoma with OCLP was unable to run VSCode and a few other apps that I needed.
I may try Ventura to see if that is any better. If not I will have to stick with Monterey, which to be honest works well enough for my needs.

Monterey is a very stable version of OS X. I have several clients that I have not upgraded yet past that due to either hardware or the fact that some have a hard time with change.

The good thing with this machine is that the SSD is easily accessible, I have different OS's on SSD that I can swap in and out as needed.

Just tried Ventura on OCLP and again VSCode will not work and also SuperDuper fails. So although it seems a good idea the reality does not live up to the expectation, at least for me ☹️

Even if you stick with Mojave/Monterey, it’s still a perfectly usable machine for everyday tasks. Adding an eGPU could extend its life a bit, though I get that not everyone wants to deal with that.

I was thinking about a CPU upgrade, from the basic 4 core. Just found a 6 core CPU for $10, so I will be putting that in tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Well, that did not go to plan. I started stripping it down but there are 2 T8 screws holding the motherboard in place and 1 of them is stuck solid and I feared that I would strip the head of the screw, so that job is delayed for a while.
While the fan was off I was able to clean out a lot of dust and it runs a lot cooler now.
