Hi there,

I have a Macpro 4.1 early 2009 with an external hard drive, I need to reinstall the original operation system. I wonder if I can do it using my Mackbook pro, Is anyone familiar with this process? I have read I can connect the laptop to the tower with thunderbolt cable, can anyone advice which cable I should get?

Thank you very much for any advice.

Hello and welcome.

Your Mac Pro should have come with a gray Apple installation disc, which is specific to that model, but I assume you no longer have it?

A few questions:
-What is the exact model of your MacBook Pro?
-Does the internal drive in the Mac Pro still work, and are you simply trying to install OS X on the external to use with the Mac Pro?
-Which version of OS X/macOS are you trying to install?
-Do you have a blank flash drive/external drive you could use to make a bootable installer on? You could use Disk Maker X to create one.
