Mac is froze Spinning Rainbow Wheel will not go away

Hello everyone. My Mac upon startup displays the wait cursor (spinning color wheel) and it never loads. I think it is because I accidentally moved a large number of files, a few thousand, to the desktop. I missed the target folder when I was dragging them and it hasn't worked since. Can anyone offer suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Thanks. It was still very slow. But I managed to move the 10,000+ items off the desktop and now it seems it's back to normal. Thanks again!
