Loading iphotos.

Hi everyone. I know I am ignorant (I'm old and not too tech savvy). When I plugged my iphone into my Mac, it used to go straight to iphoto and then load any new photos. I did an update of both the iphone 4 and the Mac when they came along. NOW it still goes straight to iphoto and the word 'loading' appears but doesn't download my photos and I can't find a way to download them. Can you tell me what to do, please?
