journaled vs apfs

lap top is not recognising internal drive, do recovery drive, restart, then internal boots (sometimes needs internet recovery— sometimes not) started clean install to correct problems and found new mojave os not compatible for journaled ...has to be apfs for clean install but time machine is journaled.... so how can apps be put back ? am traveling and using external imac drives (mojave) for lap top has got some issues am not understanding

Hi,

APFS was introduced with macOS Sierra, and internals SSDs will automatically be formatted/reformatted when installing macOS Sierra or later.

Maybe try doing a clean install of macOS, then use the Time Machine drive with Migration Assistant during setup to transfer applications and user data.
