itunes problem please help!

I cannot add any music to my itunes library because it crashes when I do I am running itunes 11.2 and I just can't solve this problem it is driving me mad

1) Is this newly purchased music?
2) Some other from a different source?

The first thing I would do is repair permissions via your utilities folder > disk utility.

its from mp3s that I have on my desktop because I backed up my entire ipod in this format before it died on me

OK try this open iTunes and minimise to the dock, now select a audio file from your desktop and double click to play.

1) Does the track play?
2) Has it now appeared in your iTunes library?

sadly no, neither suggestion has worked so far

Hi,

This is very odd as any track sitting on the desktop and opened should then appear in your iTunes library. This is one of the easiest ways to create iPhone ring tonnes. IE when you play the track the iTunes dock icon will bounce and iTunes will open.
Do the desktop music tracks play in quicktime?

So I can only assume that there are issues with the music tracks on your desktop.
