IPhone overheating and battery drain while playing GTA San Andreas is there any way to optimize it?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been replaying Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on my iPhone lately, mostly for nostalgia. The game itself runs fine most of the time, but I’m running into a practical issue that’s making longer play sessions difficult.

After about 15-20 minutes of gameplay, my iPhone starts getting noticeably warm, especially around the camera area, and the battery drains much faster than usual. I understand that older console-style games can still be fairly demanding on mobile hardware, but I didn’t expect it to heat up this much just from roaming around Los Santos or doing a few missions.

What I’m wondering is whether this is normal behavior for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on iOS, or if there are settings or tweaks people usually apply to make it run more efficiently. For example, does lowering visual settings, limiting background apps, or using a controller instead of touch controls make any difference in heat or battery usage?

Just to add a bit more context after testing a few things on my end:

I tried lowering some in-game settings (like draw distance and visual effects), and it does help slightly with the heating, but not dramatically. One thing that made a noticeable difference was closing all background apps and turning off background app refresh — the phone still gets warm, but it takes longer to reach that point.

Also, playing while charging made the overheating much worse, so I’d definitely avoid that if anyone else is facing the same issue. Using a controller didn’t really change the heat much for me, but it did reduce screen interaction, so maybe that helps a little indirectly.

Another thing I came across is that some people are using modified versions of the game that are better optimized or have unlocked settings. I haven’t fully tested it yet, but I found a version here at gtasanmod, it seems to offer a GTA San Andreas Mod APK with tweaks that might help performance and battery usage. Not sure how well it works on iOS specifically, but it might be worth looking into for anyone experimenting with different setups.

Which iPhone do you have? Did the game work without overheating before?
Has the iPhone been updated? I only ask because new (current) iOS put more strain on older models.
