ip address

Hi, I would be gateful for advice.
Since updating my macbook with the latest software update it isn't picking up my wireless network. A message appears saying "this computer does not have an ip address".
It works fine on an ethernet cable. WIfi appears to be on as it picks up various networks in the area.
There is probably a very simple answer as i am a novice user and new on this forum; grateful for help though!

Have you reconnected to your network from the WiFi Menu and reentered your password?

The networm appears to be recognized (tick next to it). When i open system preferences, wifi is on but there is a message saying "wifi does not have an ip address and cannot connect to the internet". I don't seem to be able to click on the network and re-enter password to join.
