iMovie 6.0.2 Triangle question

I am posting this on behalf of a friend and out of curiosity myself. When we import movie clips whether it's from the iSight or from a DV camera, there are two right-angle triangles right below play head. What the heck are those for? I am not into video editing yet, so I have no clue. Thanks!
