Have 10.8.5. Get white screen, wheel and bar. Bar loads, then shuts off. Can't reach safe mode or HD icon.
Only get EFI icon. Directory says 'Invalid Volume Directory Count", and "Invalid Volume File Count".
What else to try?
Thanks!

A couple of things first:

1. Have you ever done any disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs from a software perspective? You actually can do a good amount of disk cleanup on your own, and there are some excellent tools available (both free and commercial) that can assist you in those tasks.

2. Are you making a backup to an external device? That is so, so critical!

Now, what you need to do is to try and use a disk maintenance/repair program. The best (and very robust) ones are either Disk Warrior to Tech Tool Pro. If you don't have either one of those, then you are left with Apple's Disk Utility. To use it in your case, you will need to try and boot your Mac to Recovery Mode. This link explains how to do that, and what its capabilities are:

Thanks for the reply, Honestone. I cannot access the HD or disk utility. From the command line,
I get "Incorrect number of thread records". "The Volume Untitled could not be repaired after
3 attempts".
The Command screen is all I can access.

Hello and welcome.

The errors you are getting are many times symptoms of a failing hard drive. If you cannot get to the Recovery Partition, you will need an external drive with OS X installed to startup from and attempt to repair the internal. If Disk Utility fails, DiskWarrior may be able to repair it, but more often than not, the drive is failing and/or your data isn't recoverable.

-Do you have any form of Time Machine or other backup as honestone eluded to?
-Which EFI icon do you mean? Do you have rEFIt installed?
-Did this issue arise after a hard power off?
-Have you been having freezing/hanging issue leading up to this?
