Mac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) 10.11.6

Last week on startup, computer did hang on the progress bar. Had to restart.

Today, computer on startup showed near dark screen. Had to restart.

I believe this intermittent problem began with the 10.11.6 update.

Hi,

I take it we are talking about an iMac, have you done an SMC reset?

SMC reset
  • Shut down the computer.
  • Unplug the computer's power cord from both the wall and computer.
  • Wait 15 seconds.
  • Attach the computers power cable.
  • Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.

PRAM reset
  • Shut down the computer.
  • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  • Turn on the computer.
  • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  • Release the keys.

In addition to those excellent suggestions from oldscribe, it would be good if:

1. You make backups to an external device, on a "frequent" basis.

2. You perform disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs, again on a frequent basis.

3. DO NOT install either MacKeeper or CleanMyMac. They do more harm than good.

Yes, iMac. Will try your suggestion, although someone having similar issue tried same with no effect.

Good advice which I adhere to.

Are you still having these issues? I have the smaller iMac and just started having the same issues.

Did the SMC reset, also scanned for adware with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (none found). Since then, the issue has stopped. If you find more info, please post. Thanks.
