iMac ... screen zooming in an out at random

A few days ago the screen began to misbehave itself - screen literaly zooms in / out at random, often stopping at a high level of zoom and only a fraction of 'what ought to be visible' actually visible. Using Command - the text size drops to tiny ? I've cleaned the optical mouse very carefully ...

p.s. I'm not much technically inclined - I have a Mac as they so rarely create problems for me

Hello and welcome.

-Is this the entire display, or just text in a browser window?
-Is this an Apple Magic Mouse?
-If so, have you tried disabling Smart zoom in System Preferences... > Mouse?

Hello and Thank you ... disabling smart zoom has done the trick and all is now well.

I'm just wondering 'How did it turn itself on ... after many years ! '
