IMac is frozen

I have a very old iMac (planning on buying a new one soon). I was working on the internet today and everything froze. I turned it off with the power button and restarted. The apple icon appeared and then the progress bar. It got half way across then the screen turned completely white and was unresponsive. Any suggestions? Thank you. Poppi
