iMac Apple desktop background pics vanished

my background has gone blue and there are no default apple pictures in my display options. any ideas why these have gone missing ? Is this a common issue. Thanks

-Which version of OS X?
-What steps led to the Desktop pictures disappearing?
-Do you happen to have more than one user account?
-Are the rest of your files still in place - i.e. anything you had on the Desktop?
