How to restore auto-fill?

I'm running El Capitan on an old Mac. Auto-fill used to work fine, but now doesn't. My contacts is up-to-date. The autofill symbol shows up in the correct places, but it doesn't "fill".

Which app(s) is autofill not working? Mail?

Primarily on Safari; When I type in my last name, it directs me to contacts and when I click on my name it fills in OK. But it used to fill in without going through this awkward step. Ideas? Thanks for your help.

What about with another browser, like Firefox or Google Chrome or Opera? You should try one of those and see if the same thing happens.
