How to increase disk space on Mac?

Hey everyone,

I’m running low on storage on my Mac, and it’s starting to get in the way of installing apps and saving files. I’ve checked the storage overview, and it seems like a lot of space is being taken up, but I’m not sure what the best way to free up or expand storage is.

Any thoughts on what options are out there?

Thanks!

If you are running Time Machine you can go to Disk Utility app in the Utilities folder and look for Macintosh HD volumes or what ever you call it and start reducing the snapshots that Time Machine makes. I have mine on a 24 hour time cycle as to save room and start from the oldest and delete them. I would keep at least a days worth of them just in case you have to restore.

You can use the additional software CloudMounter or see the useful article https://mac.eltima.com/get-more-storage-on-mac/
It allows you to mount services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Amazon S3. That is, these are virtual disks so that your files remain accessible and do not take up local space.
You can also expand your storage by upgrading iCloud or using an external SSD.

Try GrandPerspective. It shows all you files as squares. The bigger the square, the bigger the file. Handy for showing up large files that you'd forgotten about and possibly no longer need.
