How do I stop video on news sites from playing?

I use my MacBook to check out the news sites. On some of them the video automatically plays, some do not. This uses up bandwidth, when I rarely want to see the video. What setting do I need to address to keep this from happening? This is a MacBook 10.6.8 with Safari.
