How do I reset a time machine to work with a different computer?

I have a time machine that I used for an old laptop but cannot seem to get it to recognise my new laptop ( several laptops later). Any advice on how to wipe it and reset it appreciated.

What exact Mac model do you now have?

What is the model/brand of your external drive?

Also, Apple released V10.12.2 this past week. You can get the Combo Updater from here:

https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1900?locale=en_US

Now, when you boot your Mac with the drive connected, is that drive recognized, and if so, does it appear on the desktop? If so, you should be able to use Disk Utility to Erase and Format the drive.
