High Sierra update

I am attempting to restart my iMac after downloading the latest update. When I click on the restart button as requested, I just get a black screen. Any suggestions?

A few troubleshooting questions:
-Which exact model Mac?
-You were performing a macOS update using the Software Update function in System Preferences?
-How long have you let it sit at the black screen?
