G4 Tower......happy MAC face only in startup

I have a G4 tower running OS X. Has the option to boot up in OS 9. After choosing this option, now when booting it only has "happy MAC" face on screen. How do I go back to OS X?

Hi,

Happy face sounds like a hard drive issue, possibly a new OS X install should be considered.

Have you tried booting up holding down the option key just after you hear the chime?
