G4 startup screen maelstrom

My lovely old powermac g4 starts every time, boots up perfectly to a screen where, for the last 3 days, all the screen icons
are all over the place and the top menu is repeated halfway down. A different screen visual every boot. It shuts down as normal with a mouse click, but is unusable, Help! Graphics card? Hard drive? Battery? There were no warning signs, date/time changes, strange tones etc.

You did some good investigative troubleshooting there. It does indeed sound like the graphics card may be failing.

Have you tried removing the graphics card and reseating it? Sometimes that helps. Let us know if that is something beyond your experience level.
