Frozen Desktop

I recently attempted to move files from an old PC to my recently purchased Mac desktop, through an ethernet cord I got given by someone, and the mac suddenly came up with an 'error' type screen, of which I've never seen before. I shut everything down and unplugged the cord, and now every 10 or so minutes like clockwork, it freezes. The fan also turns on and starts whirring like there's no tomorrow. I'm not sure what the problem is, or how to go about fixing it.

You get free software AppleCare support from Apple for the first 3 months. Ring them and they will sort it.

It was bought secondhand of a friend, so that's not an option.

so its not a new Mac, we'll need more info to help.

Also does the Mac un freeze itself or do you have to reboot?
