Finder deactivates from one file to the other (sporadic issue)

I haven't experienced that issue before. Can you give a little more information if possible?
-Which version of High Sierra?
-Does it happen in particular folders in Finder, or all?
-How much free space is left on the drive?
-Have you experienced any other issues like hanging/freezing?

High Sierra version 10.13.6 (17G5019)
random folders ... i need to be in the folder for a little while.
All my data is on external drives (see screenshot for details)
No other issues except this one.
i can sometimes go all day without an issue and then when i go from one file to an other in a folder , i can no longer select items. The folder can close and collapse but will not allow another selection within that folder. I need to close and re - launch finder.
