Files open with different programs than usual?

Hi. I'm not sure what's causing this to happen, but when I double click on my files, my Mac would sometimes open them up in a different program than the specified default. One time, when I double clicked on a .txt file, it would open up in Microsoft Word instead of TextEdit, even though I have never changed the default program that .txt files should open with. I thought nothing of it, but just recently, I double clicked on an .mp4 file, but it opened with TextEdit, even though I haven't changed the default from Quicktime. Is this a common glitch, or do I have something more serious on my computer?

I've been able to open video files before normally, so I'm not sure how that happened.

If it helps, I'm running OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6

I would try resetting the apps to the default application: iMore - How to set default apps on Mac

See if that fixes the issue and let us know.
