external HD cant reformat

hello i have a 2007 Macbook on which I`v used the hp media external HD for time machine but it stopped working so i got playing around with it in disk utility now time machine wont notice Ex HD ive tried to erase Ex HD but disk utility keeps telling me an error "could not unmount disk". can you help me???:(
