Emails not loading

Emails have a lightning symbol next to the inbox, normally just double click and emails load up, but nothing happening for the last few days. still getting emails on my i phone. but prefer to reply to detailed inquiries with a key board

Need to know the following:

1. What version of the Mac OS are you running?
2. What specific Mac model do you have?
3. Are you making backups to an external device?
4. Which EMail program are you using?
5. Have you done any upgrades, installations, etc. recently?

OS Catalina 10.15.7
I mac 14.3, ( 2013 ) 21.5" 2.9ghz Quad core intel i5
Not making any back ups to external devices
Using AOL which is fine on the phone
Just the recent Mac Os upgrade

With no backup, could potentially be risky in trying to fix this.

I don't use Apple's Mail program, preferring Thunderbird (did not have this issue at all). So hopefully someone with Apple Mail expertise can help.

Hello and welcome.

The lightning symbol means that Mail cannot connect to the mail server for that account. You can use Window > Connection Doctor in the Mail app menu bar to get a bit more information. You mentioned AOL...is that the account that is setup in the Mail app?
