El Capitan install help needed

Hi
I have an old imac a1224 running leopard.
I am trying to install el capitan.
I have downloaded the dmg version and
a backup image to an external hard drive
but no luck.
This is my first mac.

I am not 100% sure but I think you may need to have an intermediate upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6.*) before upgrading to El Capitan.

Hello and welcome.

Lufbrarunner is correct - you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard before going to El Capitan. In addition, El Capitan was never available as a DMG file, so I would be careful using that installer, as it is not an official/legal copy.
