The formatting toolbar has escaped from the top of my Word documents. When I go to the View menu and click on it, it appears on the screen disconnected from anything else! How can I get it back onto all Word documents?

Hello and welcome.

-Which version of OS X?
-Which version of Microsoft Office/Word?

Most versions of Word allow you to re-anchor the toolbar by simply clicking and holding on the title bar section of the toolbar, dragging it into the toolbar area in the window of a document, and releasing the mouse/trackpad button. You can also rearrange the order and placement of the toolbars that are displayed there.

Try this:

Option-click or right-click on any part of the grey space (just outside of the icons and text) in the undocked toolbar, then click Dock Toolbar in Window in the contextual menu that pops up.

Let me know if that corrects it.
