For some strange reason I can't change my desktop icons. When I go to change the existing icon to a new one,
what comes up is the word 'ico' in a box, not the actual icon. It used to work, now it doesn't. HELP!

I was under the impression that the ICO file format is an image file format used for icons in MS.

Preview should be able to open most (any?) .ico file, and will preserve transparency if present when you save it as a gif or png.

Open the .ico in Preview, click on the grapic (moves focus) Select All - command - A, Copy
Get Info - (command-I) on the Folder, click on the Icon at the top of the Panel, it should then be highlighted.
Paste
