Dashboard - keeps coming up whenever I left click anything

Help !
I'm lost - whenever I log onto my mac - within one minute, whenever I left click on any program or icon my dashboard comes up and seems to disable everything else. Thereafter nothing responds, and every time I click it seems to make the widgets appear then disappear. It's really frustrating and driving me crazy. I can't even click on the apple icon to restart. I've tried powering off at the wall as a last resort but when I rebooted it happened again. Seriously in need of advice

What Mac do you have and which OS X version are you running? Also how long has this issue been happening.
