Create partition on external HDD

Hi there,

I just wanted to double check that I can create a partition on my external hard disk without losing all the data on it by using Disk Utility in mountainLion.

It depends on what format the drive is in.
I always ensure I have a backup before messing with DU.

Also there is now no technical need for Partitions, they are a limiting pain and eventually ensure a large amount of wasted space on a drive.
