Contacts Version 13.0 (2452.7.1), Imac OS 11.6.8 (20G730), 48 RAM- crashes.
I cannot make additions or changes. It will boot, but the crashes.
I have reloaded OS several times. Same result.

I works fine on Iphone 7 and Ipad 12".

Hello,

We sincerely apologize for the lack of response so far. I have deleted your duplicate post from Tuesday.
  • Which exact model is the iMac?
  • Do you have a current Time Machine or other backup of your data?
  • Do you mean you have erased and reinstalled macOS Big Sur, or just installed over the top?
  • Have you tried unchecking Contacts in  > System Preferences... > Apple ID > iCloud > Contacts?
  • Does any other application crash or are you having any other issues?

OK, thanks.

That is an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019) and you have only reinstalled over the top of the current macOS installation. I see you have added RAM, have you tried removing it and leaving on the Apple RAM that came with it installed?

If your contacts are all viewable on icloud.com and on your iPhone and iPad, when you go to uncheck iCloud > Contacts on your iMac choose not to save them. See if that allows them to be removed without crashing.

- [ ] Have not removed extra ram. Will try that.
- [ ] Contacts is fine @ iCloud.com and on phone / pad.

FYI, extra RAM is Crucible.

Removed RAM.... much better, but then this AM contacts crashed. I just rebooted and it seems OK....we'll see.

How can I check onboard RAM?
Is there a way to know which set is problematic?

Hi,

OK, glad it helped a little.

I am not sure if Apple Diagnostics will fully test third-party RAM, but you could try. There are a few third-party utilities that will run full diagnostics on RAM, such as TechTool Pro and Atomic from Micromat.

You can also manually add sticks/pairs back in and see when the crash happens, but that is a slow and tedious process.

Took the 36 RAM out...Contacts seemed OK/
Just ran Apple Diagnostics and it showed CODE ADP000.
NO ISSUES.
Rebooted and Contacts is back to crashing. It I try to drag contact into the left column, it crashes.
I ran test with nothing connected to the iMac, just power.
Runs fine on iCloud.

Crucial replaced the 32 RAM. Put new ram in and Imac is now happy.... Sadly, this is the 2nd time this has happened...

Hi,

Glad that seems to have resolved it.

RAM very rarely fails after the initial 30 days of use, unless there is an outside influence such as a power surge, liquid/static/physical damage to the Mac, or the logic board itself goes.

Fingers crossed,

Fighting this for some time....Think I found solution.. from https://www.mac-forums.com/threads/contacts-crashes-when-searching.329986/
Back up all data.
If you use iCloud, uncheck the box marked Contacts in the iCloud preference pane.
From the list of groups on the left side of the Contacts window, select All Contacts. From the menu bar, select
File ▹ Export ▹ Export vCard
Save the exported contacts to the Desktop, then quit Contacts.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V), and press return.
A Finder window will open with a folder selected. Move the selected folder to the Desktop, leaving the window open for now.
Launch Contacts. Your contacts will be gone. From the menu bar, select
File ▹ Import
and import from the file you exported above. Your contacts will reappear.
Re-enable Contacts in the iCloud preference pane, if you disabled it earlier. Test. If the issue is resolved, delete the AddressBook folder and the vCard file on the Desktop and close the open folder window.
