Changing open windows within a program

with my MacBook Pro 2013, I was able to set a shortcut to slide between open windows anytime within any program - in the finder, in Safari, with Illustrator. But now all I can figure out how to do is just move to another window - it jumps between programs. Is there a way to move between windows - (preferrablly forward and backward - within a program?​

  • Which version of macOS?
  • How did you set the shortcut originally?
  • Did this functionality stop after a macOS upgrade/update?
  • Are you using applications in full screen mode?
  • Have you looked at your Trackpad settings in System Preferences?
