Cannot delete a mystery file from my desktop

I have to Excel files on my desktop. I just noticed them. I can't open them and when I try to move to the trash I get the message that says "The item xxxx can't be moved to the Trash because it cannot be deleted. Has my Air gotten a virus??

When I open Excel the two files don't appear. So the mystery files are sitting, unopenable, on my desk top.

I just came across the same issue. I have a mysterious xlsx file on my desktop on a 3-month old Mac. I can move, open or delete it. I get the message: "The item “79217000” can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted"

Any ideas?

This is MicroSoft ****.

Option-right-click Finder in the Dock, select Relaunch. Should delete it.
