Broken battery/screw tab = dropped laptop?

If the small screw/battery tabs (which hold the battery in place) are broken, is this always indicative the laptop has been dropped? We have a few MacBook Pros which have some minor problems, but upon opening the case we find the small screw tabs have broken off. For us, this is the difference between processing the repair as an insurance claim (for accidental damage) or repairing in house. There are no dents or any other signs of damage or abuse - just the broken tabs.

Hello and welcome.

Those tabs are notoriously fragile. They break fairly easily during battery installation if the screws are tightened too much. They will crack if pressure is applied to the bottom case as well. Sounds like normal use to me if the outer case is intact. If they are broken, it isn't automatically a sign that the MBP has been dropped. Damage to the external case is a guaranteed sign that it has been dropped, bumped, crushed, or mishandled in some way.

Hope that helps,

C
